The safety of our employees, the communities we serve and of our customers freight is our highest priority, as we strive to achieve our safety vision of becoming the safest railway in North America. Last week, a milestone towards that vision was achieved when Kansas City Southern and Gateway Western were recognized by the Association of American Railroads for having the best employee safety records within each of their respective size groups in 2000.

Kansas City Southern is considered a Class I, Group B railway, which includes railroads with four million to 15 million employee hours worked. Gateway Western is in the Group C category, comprising railroads with less than four million employee hours worked. The Harriman Awards were founded in 1913 by the late Mary Harriman, in memory of her husband Edward H. Harriman, an American railroading pioneer. The awards are administered by the E.H. Harriman Memorial Awards Institute, with support from the Mary W. Harriman Foundation.

And we are pleased to announce that through the first four months of 2001, Kansas City Southern and Gateway Western's combined safety record has improved over last year. This kind of performance is a tribute to the dedication of our craft and management employees to safety and customer service.
